Policy
The Council Chair of Windigo First Nations Council is responsible for the policy and political unit of the organization. The mandate of representing the political directions of Windigo First Nations falls within the organization's policy and political unit.
The Chiefs of Windigo First Nations Council provide the organization with the political direction respecting various issues that are of interest, priority or impact upon on our First Nations. Policy issues, proposed legislation or new guidelines and regulations often become a political point of interest for First Nation leadership as a result policy issues of various natures often can become political issues for the Council.
The policy and political unit of Windigo First Nations Council over the past year has been engaged with various activities. Wilfred Wesley, the Council Chair, is assisted by a Policy Advisor to respond to the extensive range of issues that fall under the policy and political unit.
During this past year the Council has been actively involved in the following issues:
1. Koocheching Winter Road Proposal; 2. Barrick Gold Corporation regarding Golden Patricia Mine's closure;
3. Placer Dome regarding the Musselwhite Mine Agreement; 4. NAN regarding INAC Subsidy for Winter Road Season 97/98; 5. Workshops on the implications of Financial Transfer Agreements with INAC; 6. Political advocacy regarding Ontario Works;
7. Trapper's concerns regarding usage of their facilities; 8. Political advocacy on Sioux Lookout Zone Hospital Health Care Crisis; 9. Keeping up with AFN National Issues re: Medical Services Branch; 10. Casino Rama First Nations Revenue Allocations regarding the status and progress; 11. Participation within NAN Executive Council Meetings;
12. First Nations Political Resolutions of Support;
13. Gun Control Legislation respecting its implementation by the Province and advocacy of First Nation's concerns on our Treaty Hunting Rights;
14. Advocacy of First Nation Leadership concerns regarding the Aboriginal Healing Foundation; 15. Involvement/Deliberations respecting NAN initiatives on INAC Self-Government Framework Agreements;
16. Political/technical support for Sachigo Lake's involvement regarding the United Nations Study on Indigenous Treaties;
17. Windigo representation on the NAN Organizational Review Process;
18. Political support regarding Koocheching's goal for Band & Reserve Status; 19. Participation on AFN National Treaty Forum and Gathering;
20. Cat Lake and Slate Falls priorities concerning Forestry; and
21. Opposition/advocacy concerning Lands for Life and Living Legacy Process.
